People who have reached the State Pension age may be eligible for multiple additional payments and help with their energy bills from the Scottish Government and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) by the year’s end. Four cash payments and one payment to their energy provider will be made.

State Pension Age due up to £519 in extra payments
Estimating how many pensioner households will receive all or some of the financial support is challenging. The UK Government recently announced that Winter Fuel Payments will now be means-tested for those over 66 living in England and Wales. In Scotland, the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment (PAWHP) will replace the annual payment of up to £300, but no update has been issued on whether it will also be means-tested.

Winter Fuel Payments
- Amount: Between £100 and £300
- Eligibility: People over State Pension age receiving an income-related benefit such as Pension Credit during the qualifying week of September 16-22, 2024.
- Details:
- Tax-free and will not affect other benefits.
- Letters will be sent to eligible households in October or November.
- Payment depends on age and household circumstances.
- £300 only for those born before September 23, 1944.
- Most pensioners receive £200.
