Saudi Arabia Releases 15 Arabian Sand Gazelles to Promote Biodiversity at Buraydah Oasis Park

Saudi Arabia continues its significant efforts toward biodiversity conservation with the release of 15 Arabian Sand Gazelles at Buraydah Oasis Park in the Qassim region. This is part of a larger wildlife reintroduction program overseen by the National Center for Wildlife (NCW).

The gazelle release marks the beginning of the 2024-2025 wildlife season and aligns with the Kingdom’s broader objectives under Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI).

This initiative aims to restore ecological balance and promote environmental sustainability. Arabian Sand Gazelles, which are native to the region but have seen their populations dwindle, are part of the country’s focused efforts to preserve endangered species. The program also highlights the NCW’s commitment to rehabilitating ecosystems across Saudi Arabia and enhancing the country’s environmental heritage.

The release event, overseen by the Minister of Environment, Eng. Abdulrahman Alfadley, is a collaboration between the NCW, the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development, and the National Water Company (NWC).

These efforts are expected to improve local biodiversity, provide economic opportunities for the community, and support ecotourism. The Buraydah Oasis Park is home to numerous resident and migratory species, and the gazelle reintroduction will help enrich its ecosystem.

Additionally, the release supports broader conservation strategies outlined in Saudi Arabia’s National Strategy for Environmental Conservation, which aims to improve the quality of life and establish sustainable environmental practices throughout the Kingdom. This effort also emphasizes the Saudi Green Initiative’s mission to combat desertification, promote reforestation, and contribute to climate change mitigation.
