New Eligibility Criteria for SASSA Grants in 2024

The National Treasury has introduced new criteria for SASSA grants in 2024 to ensure that the most deserving people receive them. These criteria help prevent misuse and maintain the integrity of the program.

How SASSA Determines Eligibility

  • Means Tests: SASSA conducts means tests to check if an applicant’s assets or income exceed a certain level. This helps determine if the applicant genuinely needs financial assistance.
  • Employment: Having a job does not automatically disqualify someone from receiving a social grant. The means test will consider the applicant’s overall financial situation.

New Eligibility Rules for SASSA Grants

To qualify for the SASSA Grants in 2024, applicants must meet the following income requirements:

  • Grant for Elderly Individuals, Disability, and Military Veterans:
    • Married Couples: The combined annual income must be less than R185,040 (or R15,420 monthly).
    • Single Individuals: The annual income must be less than R92,520 (or R7,710 monthly).
  • Child Support Grant:
    • Single Individuals: The annual income must be less than R57,600 (or R4,800 monthly).
    • Married Couples: The combined annual income must be less than R115,200 (or R9,600 monthly).
  • Care-Dependency Grant:
    • Unmarried Individuals: The monthly income must be less than R19,900 (or R238,800 annually).
    • Married Individuals: The combined monthly income must be less than R39,800 (or R477,600 annually).
  • Foster Child Grant:
    • No means test is performed for this grant.
  • R350 SRD Grant:
    • The monthly income must be less than R624 to qualify for this grant.

In addition to these new criteria, candidates must also meet the existing requirements. Eligible candidates are South African citizens or permanent residents aged between 18 and 59.

How to Apply for SASSA Grants

  • Where to Apply: You can apply for a permanent social grant at the nearest SASSA office. If you cannot apply in person due to illness or old age, you can have someone apply on your behalf.
  • Online Applications: The SASSA website offers online applications. Authorities can also conduct home visits for those who cannot apply in person.
  • Registration: First, register for an online SASSA account. Then, click on “Apply for a grant” on the SASSA services page and follow the instructions to complete your application.
  • Processing Time: The processing time for social grant applications may take up to three months. If your application is approved, the first payment will be made immediately.

Conclusion

SASSA grants are vital financial support for many South Africans. Over 18 million people rely on these grants to help them escape poverty. Understanding the eligibility criteria and application process is crucial. These grants significantly reduce poverty and improve the lives of those in need by providing financial assistance.
