Good news is on the horizon for SASSA beneficiaries who have endured a tough winter. As announced by the Finance Minister in his February budget speech, the next round of SASSA grant increases is set to kick in at the start of October 2024.
Minister Enoch Godongwana confirmed that the National Treasury has approved these adjustments. However, not every grant will see an increase. Here is what you need to know.

SASSA grant increases for 2024
Starting in October 2024, the South African Social Security Agency will introduce the following grant increases:
- SASSA Older Persons: An increase of R10, bringing it to R2,190 for those 60 years and older and R2,210 for those 75 years and older.
- SASSA Disability: An increase of R10, making it R2,190.
- SASSA War Veterans: An increase of R10, bringing it to R2,190.
- SASSA Care Dependency: An increase of R10, bringing it to R2,190.
Changes in leadership and future plans
Following the National Elections on 29 May, and with the ANC losing majority support, a new Government of National Unity (GNU) was established. This shift led to the replacement of the former Minister of Social Development with Minister Sisisi Tolashe.
Along with Deputy Minister Hendriks, she is now responsible for securing the funds needed to transition the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) into a Basic Income Grant (BIG). Before the election, the ANC had committed to this change by 2026, but with the new GNU in place, the timeline is uncertain.
Some argue that significant tax reforms will be necessary to fund BIG, especially given South Africa’s high unemployment rates.
Grants that will not see an increase
Unfortunately, not all government stipends will receive an increase in 2024. The following grants will remain unchanged after their last increase in April:
- SASSA Child Support: Remains at R530, with the top-up of R250 also unchanged.
- SASSA Foster Care: Remains at R1,180.
- SASSA SRD: Stays at R370.
We are awaiting further announcements from the Department of Social Development regarding potential increases for these grants in April 2025. At the same time, SASSA SRD grants are expected to extend beyond their current March 2025 deadline.
It is worth noting that SASSA grants have only been increasing by around 5% annually, which is significantly lower than the double-digit inflation rates currently affecting the country. Beneficiaries might see an additional R100 added in April 2025, though this is not yet confirmed.
