Age Requirement

  • You must have been born on or before 25 September 1958 for the winter of 2024-2025.

Residence Requirement

  • You must have lived in the UK for at least one day during the qualifying week (16-22 September 2024).
  • Suppose you didn’t live in the UK during the qualifying week. In that case, you might still qualify if you live in Switzerland or a European Economic Area (EEA) country and have a genuine link to the UK (like having lived or worked in the UK or having family there).

Exceptions

You won’t qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment if, during the qualifying week, you:

  • Are in hospital receiving free treatment for more than 52 weeks.
  • Need permission to enter the UK and your granted leave states you can’t claim public funds.
  • Were in prison for the whole qualifying week.
  • Lived in a care home from 24 June to 15 September 2024 and received certain benefits like Pension Credit, Income Support, or income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance.

When Will You Get Paid?

Winter Fuel Payments are usually made automatically between November and December. Christmas makes most payments. If you don’t receive your payment by the end of December, contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

How to Claim the Winter Fuel Payment

Most people don’t need to claim the Winter Fuel Payment, as it is paid automatically if you are eligible and receiving the State Pension or another social security benefit (not Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, Child Benefit, or Universal Credit).

If you are eligible but don’t receive an automatic payment, you will need to make a claim. You can claim by phone or by post. Here’s how:

  • Download and print the form.
  • Complete all the required sections of the form. Ensure that you provide accurate and complete information.
