Child Tax Credit $300/Month Stimulus Check 2024

Recently, a Facebook post claimed that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) would start giving monthly payments of $300 for children under six and $250 for those aged six to seventeen, starting in July 2024. This post included a screenshot that looked like a Google search result and gained a lot of attention and shares. This shows how easily false information can spread online.

Is There a $300 Monthly Stimulus Payment for Kids?

The information in the post is not true and does not match any current or upcoming IRS policies. This confusion seems to come from a misunderstanding of the temporary changes to the Child Tax Credit under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

During that time, eligible families received enhanced child tax credits as monthly advance payments from July to December 2021. However, these payments were given to parents or guardians, not directly to children.

Current Child Tax Credit Regulations

Currently, the Child Tax Credit (CTC) helps parents and guardians with the costs of raising children. The current rules, after the temporary enhancements from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 ended, are as follows:

Basic Structure of the Child Tax Credit

Aspect
Details
Credit Amount
Up to $2,000 per qualifying child
Age Limit
Applicable for children under the age of 17 at the end of the tax year
Refundability
Partially refundable through the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC)
ACTC Amount
Maximum refundable amount up to $1,400 per child

Eligibility Criteria

  • Income Requirements: Families with incomes of up to $200,000 for single filers and $400,000 for married couples filing jointly are eligible for the full credit. The credit begins to decrease once incomes exceed these levels.
  • Residency and Relationship: The taxpayer’s child should have resided with them for over half of the tax year and should have a familial relationship with the taxpayer, such as being their son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, sibling, or a descendant of any of these.
  • Support: The child must not have provided more than half of their support during the year.

Tax Year 2021 vs. Current Regulations

The American Rescue Plan temporarily raised the Child Tax Credit (CTC) to $3,600 for kids under six and $3,000 for children aged six to seventeen in 2021. The credit was made fully refundable as part of these changes, and monthly advance payments were also introduced to families. However, these adjustments were not extended past 2021.

The existing rules have reverted to the format in place before 2021, which, although less generous, still offers substantial assistance to families throughout the United States. While political conversations persist, there could be modifications or improvements in the future, but at present, the CTC operates as outlined above.

Future Proposals and Political Context

President Joe Biden has proposed in his 2025 budget to bring back the expanded child tax credit from 2021 and to distribute it through monthly payments. However, this proposal faces significant legislative challenges, especially in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. This budget proposal reflects the president’s priorities as he campaigns for re-election rather than an imminent policy change.
