What is the R370 grant?
The SRD grant, often referred to as the R370 grant because of its monthly amount, currently supports around 8 million beneficiaries. In April 2024, the grant was increased by R20, bringing the total monthly payment to R370, which represents a 5.7% increase.
How to apply for the R370 grant
If you wish to apply for the R370 grant in September, follow these steps:
- Visit the official SRD grant website to begin your application.
- Choose your citizenship status at the bottom of the webpage, selecting either “South African ID Holder” or “Asylum Seeker/Special Permit Holder.”
- Look for the yellow bar that says “Click here to apply online” in the relevant section (“How do I apply for this SRD Grant” or “Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders”).
- Provide your mobile number and click “Send SMS.” SASSA will send you a one-time pin (OTP) to verify your phone number.
- Follow the instructions on the website to complete your application once your phone number is verified.
Who qualifies for the R370 grant?
To be eligible for the R370 grant, applicants must be either South African citizens, permanent residents, or special permit holders. Additionally, they must not be receiving any other forms of government support, such as Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) benefits or National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) bursaries. Their bank account balance should also be below R624.
Future prospects for the R370 grant
Initially established as a temporary measure during the Covid-19 lockdowns, the SRD grant has been extended until March 2025. The government has earmarked R33.6 billion for the 2024 financial year, with additional allocations planned for the next two years, indicating that the grant could be extended until March 2027.
